David L. and Sylvalee K. Kaplan*

Sylvalee (Syl) Kuresman and David (Dave) Kaplan were born and raised in Cincinnati. Married for 56 years, they raised two children, Susan and Robert. Syl and Dave instilled a sense of caring for family, opened their home to friends, and provided a firm foundation of discipline and love. They enjoyed being active members in the Jewish community. Syl was involved with the National Council of Jewish Women, the Jewish Hospital Auxiliary, and Wise Temple. Dave was a long time board member at the Jewish Community Center and received the Sigmund M. Cohen Memorial Award for his service to the Jewish Community. Syl passed away September 16, 2007 and Dave passed away on October 23, 2015.

The following statement was prepared by Susan and Rob, beloved children of Syl and Dave, in their memory:

Our parents were alive during the Holocaust, witnessed the effects of anti-Semitism and believed the bonding of Jewish people kept them strong. They recognized the importance for Jews to have safe places to worship, play sports, participate in community activities, and receive social services, as Jews were often prohibited from being members of clubs and organizations during that time.

Syl and Dave gave what they could afford financially, in volunteer support and participation, to ensure the vitality of the Jewish community. In addition to what they gave while living, Syl and Dave set up a charitable trust to continue this giving beyond their death.

Next to their children, our parents valued their Judaism most. Syl and Dave gave quietly, seeking no recognition, only the hope of leaving the Jewish community in Cincinnati a little bit stronger. Our parents would be honored and humbled for being included as Legacy Flame Exhibit members.

We were very fortunate to know, be the children of, and be loved by these two wonderful people. Syl and Dave are truly missed each day and we hope they have a place in your heart.
